Whenever you create an email or a forum post, one of the required fields is a subject which tells the readers the content of the respective message. So it is important that any replies are relevant to the subject. If you have a question or want to start a conversation on something different, start a new email or forum thread with a new subject.
I notice this happens quite a bit with email as people will find the last message you sent them and reply with a totally different question. This throws me off because I rely heavily on a threaded view (both in Gmail and Outlook). While there is(usually) nothing you can do to change user behavior, when this happens I reply with a new subject line which starts a new thread.
The point here is just to make sure the body of the message is actually relevant to the subject.
