Knight Rider GPS

mio knight rider gps from knight rider online on Vimeo.

Cool-but-tacky GPS of the moment, above is a Mio GPS unit that is based off the television show Knight Rider (the original good one, not the new crappy one). It’s black, it has KITT-like lights and yes that is the voice of William Daniels you hear on this unit.

Now if I could just find an ’82 Trans Am I could put a red light bar on the front of…

As geeky as this is gonna sound I totally want one! I used to love KR as a kid! Might have to see if I can order one through work. Don’t know what the cost is gonna be if the RSP is around the $250+ mark but I would love to grab one regardless.

Rich: Check out eBay Motors. Item #200233978167 and you can have your ’82 Trans Am :)

Secretly (shh don’t tell anyone) I’d love to get that GPS save for one problem: It’s a Mio. Mio GPS units, while inexpensive, don’t hold a candle to the performance of a Garmin GPS (or TomTom for that matter). Don’t get me wrong, Mios do work, but just not as well as the more established GPS manufacturers.

And trust me, I know just about every single thing how to replicate a K.I.T.T. It costs about 40k US to put one together (exterior pieces, interior mods, etc. etc.) :D

Unfortunately it’s illegal to drive a “true” K.I.T.T. in the US because of the “wing” steering wheel (according to US law all steering wheels must be minimum 13″ in diameter and be a complete circle).

I know what you mean. Mio are nothing compared to Garmin. Garmin are probably the top seller at work.
But just for the fact that it’s a K.I.T.T. vocal replication would be enough for me to want to save some pennies and have Mr Daniels say hello to me in the morning. :)
I’ve done the research also and have numerous stockists bookmarked in FF and while creating a genuine K.I.T.T. with a standard “legal” steering wheel doesn’t sound appealing, being able to legally drive in town with one non-genuine part would sway me to do it.
        Only problem? $$$$
But I know how I am, and while I would love for the exterior to be fully modded out to the full extent in authenticity, I know I would want to completely tech-out the interior and give it a more updated, modern feel. iPod connections for the head unit, in-dash GPS, OnStar perhaps etc. I would like a retro outside with a techno inside! :)
