Cable & plug labels is done at both ends. Masking tape (colors, widths, leghts vary) is easiest - use teeth briskly for sharp right-angled break, the double stick the end of the masking tape to quickly reuse it.

Waterproof felt pens (many colors) directly onto light colored backgrounds (masking taped or not) sometimes also.

RJ45, RJ11 and whitish cable ends: treat with liquid whiteout, let dry, then nail polish (clear or many color choices). The RJ plugs can be eye & touch "ergonomicized" with childrens self-adhesive earings; clear nail polish or hot-melt glue gun for further permancy & differentiation.

Many more comments: creating an ISO standard for all handle usable devices.
