Linus Looks Towards the Future, Ignores Microsoft Completely

Who is Linus Torvalds? He’s the guy who initiated development on the original Linux kernel. So more or less he invented Linux as we know it.

In a recent interview, Torvalds made a few points very clear:

  1. He doesn’t care about competition – at all.
  2. He’s interested in moving more towards solid state devices (i.e. "hard drives" with no moving parts) that would eventually lead to Linux running on smaller faster systems.
  3. Is concentrating mostly on hardware support at this time, of which he and his team is looking to support better for 2008 and beyond.
  4. Is still a solid believer that Linux is about flexibility more than any specific feature or set.
  5. Is not afraid of Microsoft’s legal team (concerning MS patent claims) in any way that would prevent future development.

You can check out the rest of the interview here. It’s good reading for *nix’ers out there because honestly said, Torvalds is to Linux what Gates is to Microsoft and Jobs is to Apple.

Glad to see the vision being kept alive.

AMD/ATI moving towards open source philosophy should help Linus out a bit with #3.
