Booting Into Linux Your First Time
Eventually, you will come to a screen that is unfamiliar – you have never seen it before. That screen is the LILO boot menu. Choose “Linux” or “kernel” and press enter. Wait for initd to do its thing, and you should eventually reach a graphical login menu. Login as your user account, not root. We’ll play it on the safe side for now.
Once you have logged in, stop reading this tutorial and explore the world of Linux. Get familiar with the tools of the trade, such as your email client, your web browser, your “Control Panel,” and even your games. Sometimes, you may encounter a permission denied error. This is because whatever you are trying to do is a permission that is by default not granted to users. Some of the permissions include deleting system files, reading root’s files, and messing with otherwise dangerous stuff. I recommend that you play with files in your own folder, your Home folder (located at /Home/Username).
I Am Having Tons of Problems
No sweat. Remember, Linux is a tool, and to use a tool, you must learn how to use it. Whatever your problem is, try searching for it on Google or any other popular search engine. Ninety-nine percent of the time your question has already been answered.
Remember, the goal of this tutorial is not to go step-by-step how to use every program in Linux, but rather to enforce some basic principals of Linux as well as how to get started.
