When it comes to a strategy game, playing against another person is almost always preferable to playing against a computer. The problem with some of the really great strategy games (such as Risk or Civilization) is that it is almost impossible to play a full game in a single sitting because it would take forever.
This is where Freeciv Longturn comes in (lengthy, but relevant quote):
LongTurn is Freeciv game with timeout close to 24h. It’s game which you can play few months, and spent only few minutes a day.
As you can read at COP LT Page (organizer of LT0 game), there are few reasons to play LongTurn game:
Quote:
- classical multiplayer game with timeout=60s is rather like RTS deathmatch,
- it is hard to develop advanced strategy during the on-line game,
- playing big maps on the on-line server is boring,
- players are usually disconnecting then something goes wrong and trying anoter on-line game,
- players are disconnecting if a game is too long or they must go home/to bed /to work etc.,
Basically, you play against other people and you have up to 24 hours to complete your turn. Because managing several cities in Freeciv can take lots of time and thought (and is critical to the outcome), using this format allows you to fully think your moves through before submitting them.
Obviously, there are going to be differences in the rules when playing this type of game so if it sounds interesting to you then read up on it and join a game. I am considering joining one myself…
Has anyone actually played a Freeciv long turn game? If so, how was it?

Hi Jason, actually I’ve played around 20 Longturn games
I don’t know any games more complex than this. Freeciv itself is already quite complex, and longturn adds a lot of diplomacy to it. And as you mention, having enough time to think and plan really makes a big difference. For example recently a new player invented a totally new playing style, I never thought it would work. Turns out he won 3 games in a row.
Getting into a Longturn server is still a bit of a challenge for new players, but we’re working on making that more user-friendly.
