Lubuntu Is Now Official Ubuntu Derivative

lxde If you check out the www.lubuntu.net web site, the first thing you’ll notice is that it’s drastically changed to look like www.ubuntu.com. Well, there’s a reason for that as Lubuntu 11.10 is the project’s first release as an official Ubuntu derivative.

"So? What difference does that make?"

Plenty, as it means the Ubuntu team deemed the project important enough to include as an official alternative to Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu.

Who is Lubuntu best suited for?

LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) is considered by many to be the "happy medium" of sorts. Many consider the standard Ubuntu and Kubuntu environments to be "too heavy" and Xubuntu’s Xfce environment to be "too Spartan", however LXDE, which Lubuntu uses, is "just right" for some.

What is using Lubuntu like?

The user experience in Lubuntu is best described as a nice looking, no-fluff environment; it is my personal recommended Linux distribution for low-powered netbooks and older PCs, as the system requirements only require a Pentium II with 128MB RAM.

The fact Lubuntu has been granted the official Ubuntu alternative nod is a very good thing, as it indicates the project is going to stick around for a good long time. In other words, it doesn’t mean that it will up and vanish in a year, so you can install with confidence.

  1. I am going to give it a go on my test rig. Unity is horrible in my opinion. Mint LXDE is great as I have it on one of my laptops. I have good hardware but I hate bloated OS’s.
