My Mac Will Kill Your PC. Twice.

Posted Apr 21, 2009 | by David Risley

My friend, Kyle Graham, did a video where he openly declared that his PC will kill my Mac. He compared his experience with his expensive Macbook to his experience with his $400 PC.

Now, I can’t let this ballsy maneuver go without a response, can I? So, I recorded a video response.

Oh, and sorry for the weirdism happening at the beginning of the video. I’m working on it.

Let me dissect Kyle’s points here:

  1. Airport card died. Sorry about that, man. All I can say is that I have 3 Macs and have had literally no problems with any of them. I think you might have a defective Mac.
  2. Mac is super expensive. Yep, you’re paying for the fruit. However, they are powerful machines that last a long time.
  3. Mac users are like a cult. Cute stereotype, but most Mac users aren’t like that.
  4. Everything has to come through Apple. Not true. I don’t buy anything except the computer from Apple. Everything else comes from third-party vendors. There is nothing about my Mac that I feel I can’t do because of Apple.
  5. Expensive cable for hooking up your monitor. What? I had a cable come with my Mac and I can plug any monitor into my Macs. I didn’t have to spend any money on weird cables. Oh, and yes, the Apple monitors are ridiculously overpriced.
  6. Apple won’t allow you to do everything with your computer. Again, what? Find me ONE thing that I cannot pull off with my Macs. This claim might be true with the Iphone, but not the Mac. You can do anything you want with it.

All in all, Kyle has some good points. Yes, Apple is pricey. It gives the PC guys reason to rip on Apple.

Alright, PC Mech’ers. Rip me up. Go! :)

Which Of These Traits Applies To YOUR Computing Life?...

Would be more watchable and believable but for the language!! Come on!

  2. Armetta says:

    1. I can build a PC that will do all that Mac does for less the $800.
    2. Put Lunix on for operating system instead of Windows and boom your just as safe from viruses if not more so.
    3. My scheduler always works my PC performs all its scheduled tasks at 3am every morning unless I shut the computer off for some reason.
    4. Even under windows I can run several different programs with 4 different displays (2 graphics cards)
    5. I can run Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Microsoft Word, Email, while playing a movie from one dvd drive and burning a disk in the other and run wow if I want. Or run two instances of Everquest 2 if I choose.
Can you do the same on your Mac?
    6. Your only gonna get stupid viruses if your stupid enough to do things to get them. I use web based email and dont download anything to my hard drive or open files without scanning them.
    7. I do have to agree with you on some point. PCs are not for everyone. If you are technology disabled you should be using a Mac. If your technology savvy you should be on a PC no real true geek sits behind a Mac.
    Macs are for Whimps

response to point number 5: that is a totally unrealistic situation. No offense, but Sir, if you do that many things on your computer at once, then you need to get out more.

      • Dan says:

Jordan, believe it or not a lot of us do that many things at once. Some of us eat, sleep, drink, and breathe computers. The MAC subject is always iffy to me. The truth is Apple has some strong points. When it comes to marketing, Apple is the undisputed king. Look at how they integrated the Ipod and setup partnerships so that nearly everything is compatible with it. However, we are talking about computers. Macs are a joke. For those of you that think you know something about “Macs don’t get viruses”, you need to do some studying. PC users get viruses because sometimes they aren’t smart enough to use the internet without being an idiot. Mac user’s don’t face this problem based on the fact that OSX doesn’t set the user as an admin by default. It only elevates your permissions when it has to. Now some of you might like that, but personally I don’t want my OS to treat me like I’m some idiot. Which is why I agree with Armetta, those who don’t understand technology should stick with a Mac ( or learn about PC’s).

Which is why I agree with Armetta, those who don’t understand technology should stick with a Mac ( or learn about PC’s).

Also, Some of us like to build our own PC’s. How do you build your own Mac? They have utterly failed to make any attempts at designing parts that can be integrated with non-Mac parts. They could be making a lot of money off this because by not doing so, they lose potential customers that don’t like to buy pre-assembled computers. Don’t even start with the prices. Why am I paying and extra 400$ for some gloss?? I don’t even think Macs look that cool. They look like some shiny box that I would rather use as a mirror. I’d much rather have a big full tower with the cathode lighting and some crazy liquid cooling system. Sigh, Macs fail again.

And last but not least we talk about Apple as a whole. Apple has become an evil corporation that sells products based on obnoxious smear tactics that get annoying very quickly. There is that one commercial where Justin Long is a Mac and the PC keeps freezing… Seriously, I can’t remember the last time windows froze on me. I will agree that Vista does not have a friendly interface and is slow but its still strong in terms of security. Not to mention Windows 7 is great. But aside from that, people that had problems with XP were probably downloading a bunch of crap that infected the PC or just being bad users in general. So the conclusion is that if you are not smart enough to operate a computer, buy a Mac. And if you are not a technical person or you enjoy following a crowd of lost sheep, buy a Mac. for those of you that enjoy learning, power, and spending less money for a cooler looking and better running machine, then buy a PC.

what? idiot you cannot open a mac voids warranty and they will give you zero support i have NEVER seen a mac mod ive seen pcs with OSX on them but thats it its all about what you can do with it

  4. miles says:

Mac Fanboys have to come to defend their computer because it was so expensive; they have to justify their purchase

  5. Jad says:

The failure in your argument is that you run Ford on your Chevy — why the h@#$ would I want to run Mac OS on my Windows machine.

The fact that you find it important, useful, and cool that you can run Windows on your Mac is really dumb.

    Best wishes /jim

    • Charmed says:

maybe because there are all sorts of programs out there that can be ran on windows but not Mac, because Mac is not as popular as windows.

  6. Raymond Puckett says:

I had a laptop with vista on it, it sucked so bad that i went to Ubuntu. I also have a 2 year old mac book pro that i use all the time. It starts up quicker than vista, it always downloads faster; it is just all around better.

  7. Justyn says:

HA HA! That vid was entertaining. I have an old P4 640HT 3.2GHz on an old ECS RS400-A mobo and I can convert/render movies while listning to my music on Media player and checking my Live mail account. OK, so it hasn’t got true virtulization but how much can YOU really do at the same time. I’ve never needed a Virtual machine as my OS’s have always worked properly and they have compatability modes so I don’t need to go back to XP to get legacy software running. I had Vista Ultimate 32bit OEM the day it came out and it installed with no probs and worked like a charm, even on my MSI GeForce NX7600 GT Diamond plus GFX card running a Sony 46″ Bravia EX at 1080p through HDMI. I’m now running Windows 7 RC1 32bit and low-and-behold…………….it works lovely jubely. I take great pleasure in also pointing out that Custom PC’s latest mag had a nice feature called the Mac Killer *Hu hum, cough, splutter* up to 25% faster/better than the Mac for a little less money. ;-D

  8. Niceoldguy says:

    5. Latest Mac laptops do not come with VGA nor DVI adapter cables. And each gen has had a different mac-side fitting. At least they are now using a standard (mini display port).

    6. So show me how to make your airport card only connect via one band (A,B,G). This is easily exposed in Windows networking, seems impossible in OS X. Not often used, but vital for troubleshooting.

Violates the principle that the easy should be obvious and the difficult possible.

  9. Charmed says:

This guy is living in a world all his own. Granted Vista sucks but Windows 7 will wipe the OSX. And lets see you run high graphics video games on your windows on a mac box, not going to happen because your Mac only allows you to have up to 3gb of memory and PCs today allow up to 16gb even the highest a mac will go today is 8gb. Dude, you don’t know what your talking about so just step away from the computer. Your all duped up on what your Mac can do because you have never been around a real PC. Yes you could not figure out how to use the task manager in windows so you are stupid enough to need a Mac and not smart enough to be reviewing which is better mac or pc.

  10. Duane Wright says:

I canceled my subscription to PC Mech. I cannot give another dime to anyone that acts that stupid. I have three computers with Vista on them and they work flawlessly. I have no idea why anyone can sit and talk like David does and expect people to believe anything that PC Mech says about any subject after viewing that video.

  11. Lifeline says:

Ultimately its a choice. I think TRUTH states that a 1,500 custom PC will eat your 2k dollar mac. Macs are indeed easy, and they are nice, but then again, with a little technical knowledge you could spend half as much and have a PC that works better. Your Mac comes with software…so, with the 1k or more I save on my custom built core 2 duo system I can buy whatever software I choose. When my computer is outdated, I just upgrade it. When you’re mac is old..u spend another 2k . Your Mac is a sleek luxury automatic car, while my PC is a raging 6 speed muscle car. If you like fat chics and easy rides get a mac.

Point is, regardless of what you say..

MY $1500 custom computer will eat your $2500 Mac, and look sexier doing it.
    Lets do a benchmark ;)

  12. Reese says:

I’m getting so tired of mac users complaining about PC’s processing power and then saying that “you get what you pay for” with macs. Yes, the average speed of a PC is less than that of a mac. Yes, a lot of people are dumb enough to get a slow PC. But try getting a PC that actually costs the same as a mac. Then you’ll actually know what a fast computer is. My homebuilt PC cost about $1500 (~$2200 if you got an equivalent one from Dell). And it runs way much faster than any mac I’ve seen. You most definitely can switch seamlessly between OS X and Windows, and even more so than on a Mac; I’ve done it (I’m also running a homebrew copy of OS X on there). Macs are high-end, and should be compared to high-end price-equivalent PCs. Look at the Mac Mini. It sucks. Terribly. It is slow and crappy, just like the low-end PCs.

  13. Geoff says:

I wish you would include some important facts with all of your opinion. You’re obviously biased, which is understandable, but at the same time if you don’t want people to just throw your video in the trash, you might want to work on making a more valid argument.

Macs are like the consoles of computers, they are unable to upgrade and therefore become outdated the second they are released. The best PC available on the market will always be better than the best mac on the market because of this. Also all the flaws you have stated about the PC are flaws that would be apparent with Mac as well if they had the same open-ended capabilities. The best test would be to buy a computer of the same price immediately upon release and to see which one runs stress testing programs better. I have already done some similar testing where I used a less expensive PC and actually saw it outpace the Mac in many categories.

It seems like your biggest complaint is that because a PC can do more and run a lot of programs that you Mac can’t, that you get the problems that come with it, like viruses, and errors. That if you adjust your settings wrong then your computer will crash? A price I’d gladly pay to be able to adjust them.

  14. nic says:

I do not know what is going on here. But I am an owner of 2 macs, and I love the simplicity of them. They are fast and easy to use. There are so many great features right out of the box (iDvd, iTunes, iMovie). Customer Service is always accessible, and I am talking to someone who speaks English- and it is their first language. Apple’s are easy to use and understand. Windows, keeps getting more and more confusing. Where does all the stuff go??? I agree I am not a techy kind of girl. But why should you need a Microsoft certificate to operate your computer?

But yes apple’s are more money, and I agree that sucks. And if you convert to an apple you may haft to sacrifice some programs to go along with it. I just use the regular stuff on mine- so no-big-deal. And have learned to live without. If you are a big gamer, than don’t get a mac, because it is to hard to figure out how to get windows games to work with a mac. But if you are looking for simplicity and understanding along with the added security features- than a mac is probably for you. If you are a computer wiz, well then get whatever-you-want.

And lastly, why so much bickering…. Really- you guys.

Im running vista sp2 in an HP dv9910us 2 gigahurtz 3 gig ram with no problems. I have run Linux also for years. Windows 7 looks great but I will stick with vista for a while. Its very secure with MS Essentials(which I have been running ever since it came out in beta) Ms firewall, sanboxie virtual software topped off with Threatfire. With these running I still have plenty of cpu left over. Im running 3 monitors including an EVGA USB-HDMI external video card and the drivers work!
I will be honest that I have never owned a mac. Why? If it works( and beautifully!)why fix it.)

The fact that you lick your laptop shows the inherent difference between Mac users and PC users. PC users use their machines as TOOLS. Mac users use…….or view their machines as sexual devices. Why do 99% of all the mac users I run into try to “convert me”. I, being a technician, never try to convert them. If they are happy with their machine………fine! But don’t try to tell me that I am running an inferior product. I buy premium hardware with plenty of horsepower. My machines do everything I want them to do……..and more. And for a lot less money. I had ZERO issues with Vista, and now that I am running Win 7, it is even that much better. And here is the reason………..I READ THE FREAKING MANUAL. Is Windows perfect…….far from it. But I can work on my machine, and I can fix it. And face the facts. Worldwide mac is only about 5%. THAT is the truth. I live in the real world and I work on real computers……….. But thanks for the GREAT entertainment you mac fanboys provide me. You are Fantastic………….
