My friend, Kyle Graham, did a video where he openly declared that his PC will kill my Mac. He compared his experience with his expensive Macbook to his experience with his $400 PC.
Now, I can’t let this ballsy maneuver go without a response, can I? So, I recorded a video response.
Oh, and sorry for the weirdism happening at the beginning of the video. I’m working on it.
Let me dissect Kyle’s points here:
- Airport card died. Sorry about that, man. All I can say is that I have 3 Macs and have had literally no problems with any of them. I think you might have a defective Mac.
- Mac is super expensive. Yep, you’re paying for the fruit. However, they are powerful machines that last a long time.
- Mac users are like a cult. Cute stereotype, but most Mac users aren’t like that.
- Everything has to come through Apple. Not true. I don’t buy anything except the computer from Apple. Everything else comes from third-party vendors. There is nothing about my Mac that I feel I can’t do because of Apple.
- Expensive cable for hooking up your monitor. What? I had a cable come with my Mac and I can plug any monitor into my Macs. I didn’t have to spend any money on weird cables. Oh, and yes, the Apple monitors are ridiculously overpriced.
- Apple won’t allow you to do everything with your computer. Again, what? Find me ONE thing that I cannot pull off with my Macs. This claim might be true with the Iphone, but not the Mac. You can do anything you want with it.
All in all, Kyle has some good points. Yes, Apple is pricey. It gives the PC guys reason to rip on Apple.
Alright, PC Mech’ers. Rip me up. Go!

David. It’s on!
I’ll post my official response back over on my site.
That was actually pretty funny! You had me laughing pretty good there.
LOL, was funny. I can’t wait for pagangirl to reply.
OK, you asked for it Noobachalupa.
Hey Dave.
Having studied the Mac a bit more carefully since I last criticised it, I have to admit that a Mac is an extremely high quality PC running *NIX. You may notice that I no longer criticiose Macs at every available opportunity: That’s because it’s getting stale, plus with the demise of Jobsweh things could well be due for a change in some way.
However having recently run Windows 7 beta on a brand new PC I built at the weekend with a 3-core Phenom CPU, 64-bit Win 7 installed, ‘tried it with 8GB 800MHz DDR2 RAM, although only 4 GB installed normally currently, I reckon the PC could do as much if not more than your Mac… However I am unable to fit the 16GB RAM that is fitted to your Mac due to only having 4 memory slots on the board + the fact that the Gigabyte GA-M720-US3 board I chose will only handle 8GB, which leaves me at a disadvantage. Also of course I am unable to run OS10, and I must admit that I haven’t tried it with Linux yet. – Nevertheless time will tell.
I will venture that anything you can do on a Mac with 8GB RAM in Windows 7 beta, or RC1 from May 5th, or even the RTM when it’s available, I can do too on my PC, barring running OS10 of course.
I’m not saying “Anything you can do I can do better.” I am saying “Anything you can do within the limits set I can do too on my PC.”
As I said above; time will tell.
Can’t we all live in peace and love each other.
I agree with most of what you said, But over the Years I have learned to tame XP and its Small OS fast and sleek too. I have 1000+ stealth Portable Programmes (Collected over the Years) on my USB which i can use home, office,US,china, india,Africa and be equally productive and not loose my edge with the programmes/Productivity and to Keep things simple and sweet.
I think it’s pretty hard to compare a Apple computer to a PC; Apple computers usually come in two types, desktop and laptop, but their overall quality and parts are very similar. PCs on the other hand come in infinite configurations (or very close to), they can range widely in price and quality (and no, price does not always equal performance of quality for PCs (or PC parts)). That being said, I think you will find that PCs are much more versatile due to the different software and hardware available for them, you can use a wide range of OSes and you can customize your hardware to the exact specifications you require. In terms of speed, PCs are also pretty fast; my school toshiba tecra (which sells for a little bit over a thousand CAD, or like $800 US) can run 2 copies of XP, 2 copies of windows server and fedora all at the same time without much lag (using VMWare Workstation). Recently I built my brother a $400 US gaming computer that runs very stable and fast (can max out WoW @ 1920×1200 and still get over 60fps; can also get Crysis Warhead running at that resolution with medium settings and 30fps). I think there are a few uses for Macs, however I think it is limited to using them because you are used to the software and don’t want to take the time and effort to switch to different software, and/or you don’t trust prebuilt computers and don’t want to build one yourself.
The specs for the $400 is as follows: Core 2 Duo E6600 | 2×1GB Kingston ValueRam DDR2-667 | Evga 9600GSO OC | Intel DG965WH | Seagate 500GB | Lite-On DVD/CD-RW | Power Man 350W | Inwin Case | Windows XP Pro

Hey Dave, tell us what you really think about Vista. The rant at 3:27 had me dying although I felt that it was the clean version. It seemed you were holding back a little. Anyway thanks for that!
I’m a PC guy I guess mainly due to the cost of the Macs and the fact that I like to build up my own systems. I know that the lack of full configurability is the main reason that macs are so stable but I always enjoy it when a couple of fanboys square off for battle in the ” OK corral at high noon “.
BTW, thanks for the ” Macbook porn ” in the beginning of the vid. It was something unexpected first thing in the morning that has probably scared me for life ( I doubt it ).
Dave I was in a Mac store the other day and a guy was bringing in in his mac for a repair of a repeat problem . As far as vista being crap I love it once you cut out all the crap such as aero and make it look like classic windows it runs great . It does a lot of things that XP couldn’t do . As far as updates go mine are done during the day automatically I have had no problems with it . ” my PC’s are shut down at night to be green”. Also where is your Mac Mech site . oops i forgot you cant tinker with your mac as the warranty will be voided . As far as windows 7 is concerned it like the mac os and Vista will be sold on all on its bloated interface .
Erm it seems that you say ‘PC’ in a way that assumes it is a cheap slow PC. I think you’ll find if you spend the same on a PC and build it yourself as you do on the Macs then you’ll get just as much ‘Horespower’ as you put it. Also when you run vista you have to reboot every few days to stop it from dieing? WTF??? My PC runs vista 24/7 for weeks and weeks without needing a reboot to stop it from dieing. WTF are you doing to yours? Installing hundreds of applications, running them all at once to try and kill it? I think when comparing Macs and PCs people should compare systems that cost THE SAME, and then try and find arguable differences, not just say “A PC could never do this”. Because thats just a plain lie and you know it.
I’m writing this from my Macbook Pro that happens to be running Vista for the moment, and I do build my own PC based desktops… And the fact that mac’s don’t crash is nothing but an over generalization… But to top this off it seems quite ironic that you bash windows and your PC’s constantly and whine because you can’t configure a schedule task (by answering its questions) — yet you are the one teaching us to build PC’s? Come on…..
Dave, Absolutely loved your video, I took it in the “fun” spirit in which recent Mac/PC adds have been aired.
I currently have 2 older pc’s running XP and a new Dell running Vista which I bought for $300 in January. However I also purchased a new Macbook pro also in January and have found it to be so easy to use with no annoying problems which I seem to always have had with PC’s ever since my first one I purchased in ‘93 which ran Windows 3.11, which by the way I paid a little over $2k at that time. The only complaint I have with my Macbook is the absence of a numerical keypad but thats a laptop thing. Since getting the Mac I hardly use the PC’s.
Also as far as I am concerned you not only offer incredible information with tremendously unbiased advice and encouragement but you also offer a fun creative atmosphere which I find extremely encouraging and refreshing.
Howdy Dave, and computer buffs from all camps.
I don’t normally get involved in the Mac vs PC debate, but Eh!
Came across your Mac vs PC video on Youtube, was so entertained that I watched it twice.
Had a peek at Kyle’s video as well, obviously he’s Windowscentric, but he’s trying. lol
Currently I use a 1 ghz G4 17 inch iMac, which happens to be the world’s toughest and ugliest Mac.
This thing has never been cleaned, it’s a yellowish brown color from cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, the screen is covered with spittle from me sneezing, and has dust bunnies growing around the base and inside.
I took it on a year long road trip across Canada back in 2004 – 2005, the iMac rode in the camper trailer, in a cardboard box, wrapped in a blanket.
It saw humidity in the area of 80% to 100% for nearly 2 months in the Maritimes, got rained on a couple times when I fell asleep and left the window open, was bounced so hard on a rough gravel road in Saskatchewan that one stick of ram got jarred out of it’s slot, and when I stopped to set up camp, I found the computer had jumped from the middle of the trailer to the back of it.
When I returned home, I stored the computer in a friends garage for several weeks, at temperatures around the -30º C range, while I looked for a new residence.
In 6 years the OS has crashed 3 times, all in short order, within a few days.
When I upgraded from 10.28 to 10.4x, I saw the infamous kernel panic for the first time.
Quite startling being a Mac user!
No big deal, the new OS had compatibility issues with my old software, I dumped the software, did a clean install, it hasn’t missed a beat ever since.
Best porn surfin machine on the planet! lol
With the exception of restarts required by software updates and power failures, my dirty little iMac has been running 24/7 since November 17/2005, it sleeps when I tell it to, and it works when I want it to.
Bring on the Mac Pros, home made bombs, and Alienwares, my iMac will eat them for breakfast! Twice!

You’re a funny guy, who speaks much truth.

Took it home, warmed it up for a couple hours, fired it up, been running ever since.

Big Bill OOOOH Canada Ehh and just think the Canucks kicked the Blues 2X Twice
Yes I use a PC, but not with windows….nooooo!!! Linux only way to go
))
Hubby wants a Mac and I think it would be absolutely GREAT if he got one….then all the machines could talk
))
I have a talking alarm clock, but it doesn’t run on Linux.
I came from Windows. I did the Linux thing. Mac OS X does contain some elements of *nix architecture, but it’s so much more refined, slicker (VMWare kicks on OS X), AND it works with a lot of commonplace peripherals — my Epson Perfection 4180 does not work in Linux (even up to moden SUSE 11.1, Fedora 10, Ubuntu 8.10). it does in OS X.
I just bought a Macbook Pro too — they really are nice, overall. One doesn’t need high end hardware to get high end performance. Vista’s bloat is horrendous, period.
The model he refers to is still available; I could have bought a floor model for $2000 (not $2500) but went for a new $2000 model anyway. (the screen was touched by too many people.
If anything, I wish these had the protective glass like the iMacs, but that’s a very small gripe.)
“Find me ONE thing that I cannot pull off with my Macs.”
Play a modern game other than WoW! Kung Fu Panda doesn’t count. Just kidding… but seriously. You really can’t game on a Mac.
Awesome video response! You’re cute too! I wish I was that Macbook Pro…
Anyway, name one substantial thing that a Mac can’t do… playing modern games?
Wait, since when is playing a game a substantial thing to do?
I’ve used many versions of Windows over the decades. I think even Windows 1.0 is still better than Vista… it was Vista that convinced me to go Mac…
I’ve used SuSE, Fedora, and Ubuntu (8.10). Linux isn’t as polished and NONE of them supported my Epson Perfection 4180 scanner. Mac does, right out of the box.
Yes, Macs use similar hardware components. Only not as much RAM or CPU power…
…and yet OS X 10.5.6 seems to load up faster and remain consistently fast compared to Vista. And my Vista machine had 8GB DDR2-800 (CL4) RAM, a Q9650 processor, a Velociraptor hard drive, the lot… Microsoft sucks, and not in a good way!
The extra hardware power isn’t needed, neither is the electricity needed. Can’t say that about any Windows PC worth using…
But I’ve yet to see a $500 24″ monitor that uses an H-IPS panel. They all retail for $500 and use pathetic TN panels. That’s great if you waffle around on the internet all day and play gideo games, but for serious work – especially in graphic and web design? Bugger all that, give me a quality screen… The cost of the 24″ imac with the 2.93 or 3.06GHz CPU is justified because of the integrated monitor.
Well no my PC can’t run windows 7 and leopard, but thats only because apple doesn’t allow it. But can your mac game?! No i didn’t thing so.
I stopped listening when you said you can’t setup scheduled task. Stick to your Mac lol.
can i just add, im a pc
and they turn on and work to
they can have virtual machines too with mac os x (hackintosh)
you can use what you call “spaces” on a pc, either get a FREE third party software or install a linux distro.
you can also use three screens on a pc, more if you want (ive seen people on youtube put 6+ screens on youtube.
and scheduled backups has worked for me for about a year now
macs can crash as well, something called kernel panics
but if you don’t want BSOD’s in Windows, then just get Ubuntu or something
you don’t have to use windows.
seriously dude, you need to do some more research if you want to say that pc’s don’t have capabilities as macs
try loooking up hackintosh on google or on youtube and you’ll see people putting Mac OS X on their pc’s with no problem at all.
dude!! WTF!! a fricken Dell Inspiron Mini 9 (300 dollars) can run mac os x!!!
and no, your not going to be spending a lot of money on a pc with the same specs as a mac, maybe up to 200 dollars less!!
my brother has a netbook, and i used a extra screen (19 in) and it never failed!!
and once again, WINDOWS IS NOT THE ONLY OPERATING SYSTEM!!!
nice video. but, what was hier compared with what ? …
OS vs. Windows?
Mac vs. PC?
Mac+OS vs. PC+Windows?
without OS is Mac just a damm good and expensiv PC

You have been brain washed my friend! Don’t make me start recording a video!! Hey by the way how much does it cost to have the current version of OS X since it’s release? Even the OS is way over priced!
