After running a first-generation Mac Pro for over 4 years, it is about time to upgrade. In looking at the comparison between the Mac Pro and the new iMacs, I arrived at what (to me) was a surprising decision.
Coming from a Mac Pro, I had always considered that I would upgrade to a Mac Pro. However, after looking at the pricing and the options, it is clear that the iMac 27-inch is a better deal for the money.
I’m picking the iMac instead of the Mac Pro because…
- I don’t require server-grade hardware in my day-to-day operations.
- I DO need speed, and the i7-based iMac will deliver that in spades.
- The iMac comes with a 27-inch Cinema Display, whereas the Mac Pro comes with nothing.
- The iMac comes with a kick-butt HD webcam built-in.
- When I load the iMac up with the highest-end processor, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB drive along with a 256MB SSD drive, it is still less than the only Mac Pro that I’d consider enough of an upgrade. And, when you consider the price of the entry-level Mac Pro and the fact the iMac comes with a screen, it makes it even more clear.
I’m planning to get the top-of-the-line iMac, with a secondary 27-inch display. So, 2 27-inchers and a killer Mac behind it. While also being able to significantly reduce under-the-desk clutter by removing the tower and all the wires.
