Map Area Codes To Their Location

I’m sure you have received a phone call and your caller ID shows the number is from an unusual area code. While this is usually a definite indication the caller is a telemarketer, one thing I like to lookup is the location of the respective area code.

One thing I have noticed is a lot of the unknown calls tend to originate from the mid-west. I’m not sure why this is, but oh well. Anyhow, this tip is just more of an FYI in the event you ever want to map an area code to a location.

I simply wont answer calls from unknown area codes. If it is important they can leave a message.

You can actually get more detailed information on some websites, such as http://www.WhereCall.com. You can start entering the phone number, and as you type it will display the location. Having the city, rather than just the region, can be helpful sometimes (for example, the city name may be enough to jog your memory that it could be an old neighbor that had moved last year).

Spoofing of the number isn’t unheard of… so going by the number on your caller could be no more useful than reading a note on the wall at a truck stop. In researching a number that was recently calling me, it was ID’d “Florida” with a California number and supposedly the call center is some where in the Caribbean.
There are bills in both the Senate and House that would make this illegal, neither have passed into law AFAIK. In todays age of phishing, identity theft and other bogus schemes going on you simply have to be very careful on what calls you answer and if you do, be careful about what info you divulge.
