If you spend time planning a project, whether it be a new website, a business, a school paper, etc, a mind map is a tool which can help you take the concepts from your mind and put them onto screen or paper in a visual way. From WikiPEdia, mind mapping is:

A mind map (or mind-map) is a diagram used for linking words and ideas to a central key word or idea. It is used to visualize, classify, structure, and generate ideas, as well as an aid in study, problem solving, and decision making.

If you would like to give mind mapping a try, there is a free software application called FreeMind which you can try. Freemind runs on Java and is a very nice application. Once you get the hang of it, it can be a powerful tool.
