A feature of Firefox which is somewhat buried but quite useful is View Page Info. Using Fx 4 for Windows this is accessible in one of two ways. Either you right click on anything that isn’t a link or an image, or use the keystroke ALT+T (for Tools menu) and then click Page Info. The former is the easier of the two.
Example of right-clicking on anything not an image or link and selecting View Page Info:

Example of ALT+T > Page Info method:

Why is Page Info so great?
Page Info is great because of the Permissions section. From there you can get quick access to what you want and more importantly don’t want to load on a per-site basis:

This window gives you very quick access to settings on a per-site level that would otherwise require to dig through a lot of menus for – all in the same window.
The two settings you would probably be most interested in are Load Images and Set Cookies. Concerning the images, there are some sites that load much quicker when all images are turned off. Concerning cookies, ‘Allow’ means to always accept and save them, ‘Allow for session’ means the cookie will be written but be deleted once the browser is closed, and ‘Block’ means the browser won’t accept any cookies for that particular site.
For the curious that examine the Security tab
The vast majority of web sites you visit will not have any "ownership information":

The reason for this is because ‘Security’ only shows information concerning login certificates.
An example where the Security tab will actually show you information:
Hotmail.com always prompts an SSL-secured login:

When you see the green (literally), you can to go Page Info > Security and actually get information at that point.
