Personally, I like to keep up with the latest releases for any software package I have installed on my system. From 7-Zip to Winamp, I like to know when a new version is available so I can check out the updated features. The problem, however comes when certain programs do not have a function to periodically check for a new version, leaving you to either have to subscribe to a news letter or occasionally visit the site to check.
Any easy way to “create” a notification for yourself is to subscribe to the program’s RSS feed. Many project websites offer this ability, so by subscribing to their “releases” feed you can be notified via your news reader.
I have found this to work very well, as often the RSS item includes details about the release, so I can read about the update and, typically, download the release without ever having to visit the site.
