MyDefrag – Have You Tried It?

For those of you that have ever used JkDefrag, MyDefrag is what it has evolved to, and it’s still as great as ever.

When it comes to running a file defragmentation on your Windows PC, the only thing you truly care about is getting it done as fast as possible with no fuss. MyDefrag does just that.

What are the improvements over JkDefrag?

Here are five good ones:

1. It has an installer now

The entirety of JkDefrag used to be nothing more than a single executable file. It worked, but for some it was cumbersome to work with. The installer now puts things in their proper places. You get a Start menu entry, icon on the desktop and so on.

2. Easy-use defrag screen saver

This was one of the best parts of the original JkDefrag, however it had to be installed 100% manually. This is now part of the auto-installer. And yes, you can opt not to install or use if you wish.

3. Flash/SSD defrag option

Do file fragments happen on USB sticks and SSDs? You bet they do. MyDefrag is “smart” enough to have an option just for storage mediums of that type.

4. A help file

Yes, I know.. sounds simplistic, but hey, documentation is good and MyDefrag has it.

5. Scriptable

For those of you that like absolute control over what your programs do, you’ll be happy to know that MyDefrag can be scripted. The help documentation tells you exactly how to do it. And yes you can run MyDefrag completely from the command line if you like.

I personally give MyDefrag the thumbs up as the best and most useful defragmentation program there is. For a freebie it’s tough to beat.

  1. I agree with Rich, this is a valuable FREE tool. The latest version 4.2.9, has some added improvements and it is a standard/default installation for client machines. I wish Ninite would pick it up.

Just an FYI: new OS’s don’t handle the screen saver function well, so make sure to deselect that option and instead create a scheduled task. Better to have 1x per day this is runniing anyway versus every 4 hours when the screen saver activates.

    • The screen saver feature with JkDefrag/MyDefrag has always been a bit on the wonky side and seems to work better in Win2000 and WinXP compared to Vista or 7 – but at least the feature has an automated install procedure and is easier to configure now.

Funny you should mention this as I am using it to do a Monthly defrag on my C drive right now . I love it

  3. I’ve been using it for about a year now. I fix my associates computers all the time and I load it on to all their computers. I have been following his updates/improvement and they are nothing shy of amazing. I corrected 100′s; closing in on 500; of Laptops and desktops by running MyDfrag and his latest breakdown of Daily, Weekly, but the Monthly, as Larry has characterized; is the absolute greatest . There are other defrags out there that are very, very good..closing in on excellent… and faster; Piriforms Defraggler and I/OBits Defrag to name a couple, but this one for deep reorganizing optimization and defrag, I haven’t found anything better and I’ve been fixing computers for over 30 years now. One would think I have stock in the company but I don’t .. great program.
