National Wireless Carrier Got You Down? Try a Regional

In the United States, unfortunately it is the case where most people are only aware of three wireless carriers, that being Verizon, AT&T and Sprint. Why? Advertising, of course. The big wireless companies obviously have deep pockets for gobs and gobs of advertising everywhere. Television, magazines, billboards, etc.

Regional wireless carriers are a sound alternative to the nationals, and in most instances will offer you a better deal – even if they use a national’s network.

In Tampa Bay Florida (one of many coverage areas), one such alternative carrier is MetroPCS. One of their plan offerings is arguably one of the best deals going. $40 a month for unlimited local/nationwide/voicemail/texting/picture messaging/web access – no contract. Yes, it’s month-to-month.

While I don’t like to use Wikipedia as a source of information, they do have the most exhaustive list of USA wireless providers. You will be amazed at how many there are. Chances are good you may see one in the list that’s local to you that you may not have been aware of.

You can also see a more friendly list here that list only the mobile phone companies.

Regional carriers usually have to put out more effort to get business. If a national’s offering leaves you with the thought of, "There must be something better than this.. and I don’t want to use prepaid..", seek out a regional provider. They may have the "just right" plan you were looking for.

    Good idea.

Timely post. I just switched to Verizon prepaid from a Verizon contract, because I wasn’t using it enough to justify the cost. Now, I had to turn off text messaging, because Verizon was sending me spam in order to pilfer prepaid funds.

A regional may be next, once my prepaid funds are gone.
