At work, we have a typical small business setup with a single server and several workstations. Each workstation has the ability for remote connection for working at home, which requires the computer be available on demand. To save power, we want the computer to be in sleep mode when it is not being used. So to make the computer available when needed a simple Wake on LAN command has to be sent.
To allow users to easily send Wake on LAN requests to their computer, I use the ASP.NET Wake on LAN control panel.
Wake On Lan is an web application to allow users to remotely wake a PC that is either sleeping or, if the machine supports it, powered off. This allows organisations whose computers currently do not use power management to access the savings available whilst not inconveniencing their users or administrators.
Installation and usage is incredibly easy. Just type the name of the computer to add it control panel and then click a link (when applicable) to wake it.
Having this installed and available has made a difference in our power bill as well. No exageration, we are saving hundreds per year.
