news_gator_logo Its about time. Newsgator, one of the few holdouts actually trying to charge money for an RSS feed reader in a world of free readers, has finally gotten with the program and decided to release their software as free downloads.

This is good news for users because the Newsgator clients are actually quite good. You can now freely download FeedDemon (the Windows client), NewNewsWire (for the Mac), Newsgator Go! (for mobile devices) as well as NewsGator Inbox (a plug-in for Microsoft Outlook).

According to the Newsgator announcement:

What we’re working to do is to saturate the market with our clients. Anyone who wants a rich experience for consuming content, or anyone who uses multiple computers or devices and wants a best-of-breed experience on each can now use our clients. Using a Mac at home, along with an iPhone? NetNewsWire and our iPhone reader will sync up. Have a PC at the office? FeedDemon will sync with your other two applications. And they’ll all sync with NewsGator Online. It all just works.

So, those of you who would like to try out a full-featured and, now free, RSS client, go give one of the Newsgator programs a spin. While I always liked their programs, I never thought paying money for an RSS client made any sense. There are so many good free ones out there already. Now that Newsgator is getting in on the action, Newsgator is definitely worth another look.

For me? I’ll probably stick with Google Reader. Its my personal favorite.
