Old Windows Movie Maker On Windows 7 [How-To]

Said honestly, Windows Live Movie Maker Beta, in a word, sucks. It lost so many features compared to the old Windows Movie Maker that it’s just not worth using.

Are you stuck without a free video editor in Windows 7 at this point? No. You can install the old – and far superior – Windows Movie Maker in Windows 7.

All you have to do is download and install it.

What you want is Windows Movie Maker 2.6. You can download this here.

The installation went thru without a hitch and everything worked fine.

Will this software work for Windows Vista?

Yes. It was designed for Vista originally so it will work in both Vista and 7.

  1. We’ve been using Windows Movie Maker on our XP machines to make our real estate virtual tour videos. We now have one new PC with Windows 7 and was delayed in creating new tours until I found out about the version 2.6 download. Thanks!

  2. Thanks for that, I hate the new Windows Movie Maker!
Why they had to “improve” it, I don’t know.

  3. I dont like it !!! its more disorganized and now it takes me forever to do because everything is everywhere and like the one before u had more controll .. this one its soo bunched up I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! now i have no idea i have a huge project due and thanks to this crap it aint going to come out good at all!!!

  4. Thank you for this. Works fine on Windows 7 Home Premium. Slowmo and fade effects ok. Windows live isn’t overwritten so you have the choice.

If you’re having trouble with it telling you that it only installs on Xp just go the the download and hit properties and change the compatibility to Windows Xp service pack 3

Thank you so much!!!! The new Windows “live” movie maker is horrible. On top of that, you have to install some huge “live” framework, which takes too long and is riddled with error messages. The old movie maker installed in 60 seconds and without any issues. Thanks!

  7. Try the latest release of the BETA version of Windows Live Movie Maker. It is amazingly cool and easy!
