Open Thread: Post Your Computer Specs

Posted Jun 17, 2009 | by Rich Menga

image This is a call for all of you out there to post a comment telling us what you’re running right now for a computer. It doesn’t matter if it’s old or new, pre-built or custom, fast or slow, laptop or desktop, etc. Post your specs.

If you have multiple computers in the home, go ahead and name them all.

What I’m looking for here is a simple one-liner for each computer containing its specifications, monitor resolution, the current operating system on it and how long you’ve owned it.

Here’s an example using my two computers:

Custom build, 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 16x DVD Burner, EVGA nVidia 512MB video, dual monitor, 1680×1050, Windows 7 RC, 3 years

Dell Inspiron 6000, 1.5GHz Celeron M, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD, 8x DVD Burner, integrated video, single monitor, 1680×1050, Windows XP SP3, 4 years

If you don’t know all the above info for your box, just take your best guess or put "unknown" for the ones you don’t know.

If you want to add in additional info like make/model/dimensions of components such as for motherboard, RAM, monitor(s) and so on, feel free to post that as well.

Why am I asking for this info?

A few reasons:

  1. There’s going to be a swath of you considering upgrading to Windows 7 in October. If we know your specs, we can give better advice and tips because not everybody runs a super-duper-fast quad core machine.
  2. For those running older hardware, this gives us a better idea of what Linux distributions to recommend to keep you modern without the need for hardware upgrades.
  3. Using a laptop? Would be nice to get a general idea of how many of you have one.

Go ahead and post your specs!

Which Of These Traits Applies To YOUR Computing Life?...

At this time I am experimenting with Windows 7 32Bit and Windows 7 64Bit, the funny thing is I have not seen one Blue Screen, where as Vista was a bugger to get installed and Blue screened on the ASUS three times before I deleted it.

    • My 64-bit Win 7 RC hasn’t blue-screened yet either, although I did have to run the recovery disc after I added more RAM and installed the current graphics card: For some unexplained reason it said NTLDR was missing, yet it was working fine beforehand, and AFAIK the hard-drives hadn’t even been touched when I installed the components. -?

      • Monte says:

I’ve been poking around in the services, GPO’s, and the registry.

But I am doing this with Virtual Machines (VM Ware – 4.0 didn’t have support for the network/sound/video so I had to bite the bullet and upgrade to 6.0.5) I have five VM’s two that are 32 and 64 bit source then three with different configurations. (One Multi Boot configuration had XP, Vista, Win 7 32, and 64, Vista bit the dust in about an hour).

Even with poking around looking at different things (I wrote a book about it) and changing things I haven’t made it blue screen. I have only used the recovery console twice, one to see how it worked (easier than Vista or XP) and once when I changed a series of GPO’s and couldn’t get logged back in.

And I like the repair console but on my ASUS I couldn’t get the F8 key to go to the console the boot sequence is to fast, cool.

        :)

        • I’d like to read that book eventually. How do I get hold of a copy? Your blog? (I haven’t even had a chance to look yet. – In response to my question I’msure the PC Mech moderator won’t mind you doing some veiled advertising. – (?)

I installed Win7 RC1/32 bit on this system for a couple of days and it worked just fine. I could use a bit more ram but the system was very fast and I encountered no difficulties. I intend to install the 64 Bit version shortly and then go through the process of learning a new OS. I do not anticipate any problems with my hardware. I build my own systems and have since my first computer around 1980 which came in a box od parts requiring assembly similar to the old HeathKit items, for those of you old enough to remember that fine company.
