   Since I make at least 2 round trips from Texas to Nova Scotia every year, I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy a GPS, this isn’t it.
   1. Only alternative to GPS is “stone age” paper maps, seemingly ignoring a route app on a laptop.
   2. One breath talking about saving gas with a GPS, then talking about playing the “right-left” game, aimlessly driving around with no destination in mind.Tsk Tsk
   3. Learn street names with their GPS. Right, just like they learn to spell with their spell-checkers
   4. Tell their kid when they are going to get there. Tell the kid to quit whining – knowing when you’re going to get there doesn’t get you there one second earlier.

   Most Americans can find Taco Bell with their Hummer without a GPS

   I don’t eat at Taco Bell. I don’t drive a Hummer. I drive an ‘05 GMC Canyon with a 4-cyl that gets 26mpg on the highway. My GPS is a Garmin StreetPilot c340.

   My c340 has paid for itself almost three times over in the gas and time I’ve saved, even with the “aimless” driving included, as you put it. A printed map never did that for me, and never will. I will never go back to printed maps.

   If you don’t want to buy a GPS, go to any car rental place, rent a car for a day, and rent along a GPS with it (usually a Garmin StreetPilot c340). Very inexpensive. Then you can decide for yourself whether you want one without paying full retail.
