Some cases I’ve used have thumbscrews behind the front panel; so in order to remove the side panel it is necessary to disengage the clips keeping the front panel on and remove the front panel in order to access the thumbscrews that you undo to release the side panel.
On a run-of-the-mill PC these days (2009) the amount of cooling that Dave has shown here is usually enough; although I’d be tempted to add another outlet fan on the back panel also personally. It never hurts to have too much cooling; it only hurts to have not enough.
