Preventing Your Firefox Right Click Menu From Being Hijacked

One thing which really annoys me on websites is when they ‘redefine’ (hijack) the right click context menu. I’m not really sure what people are trying to accomplish with this unless it is just a half-hearted attempt to prevent you from viewing the source or downloading your cached images. Regardless, there is an easy way to prevent this in Firefox.

Basically, it is just a checkbox in the Options dialog of Firefox. Easy enough. One thing you need to keep in mind however, is some sites provide right-click menus you might like, so this will disable them as well:

It should be noted that disabling this setting will prevent customized context menus from working on sites like Google Docs… so it’s a toss-up on which feature you like more.

This is a good thing to know until people making websites realize this annoyance is up there with flash intros and background music.

There is also an option in TinyMCE (the editor for WordPress, Joomla! and a multitude of others) that can be enabled which will hijack your right-click menu. I believe it is tables. It drives me insane! Thanks for the tip.
