Before we begin in earnest, let’s talk about why you might want to have a website. There are a lot of different types of sites out there and the great part about the internet, in general, is that it is a free medium to do with what you want.
Some of the common things people do on their websites today are:
[hidepost=1]
- A Company Website. More and more companies every day are entering the internet. In fact today, it is almost a matter of reputation for a business to have a presence online. The most basic company websites simply talk about what the business does, the products or services offered, and provides a means to contact the company.
- A Family Website. Some people like to set up a website for the family to keep in touch with each other. They are great for posting family news, pictures and announcements.
- A Personal Website. Some people want to have a website just for personal reasons. They might want to use the site to opine on whatever interests them. They might wish to post their digital photography on the internet. Whatever the purpose, this type of site can simply be your digital playground, so to speak.
- A Content Site. This type of site usually revolves around one theme and includes lots of reference content about that topic. For example, I run a large site about computers and the site consists of 1000+ articles on various aspects of owning and operating a personal computer.
- A Social Networking Site. This type of site is a little newer in the field, but it essentially acts as a hangout on the internet. MySpace.com is an example of this type of site. People can chat with each other, post pictures of themselves and make friends.
- An Ecommerce Site. This type of site is one that acts as an online store. You have a product catalog online and the site is meant to sell to people over the internet.
- A Forum. Many sites today are centered around a large discussion community. These communities have members and those members discuss various topics in a bulletin board format.
There are so many ideas for websites that it would be impossible to list them all.
You might want to have a website purely for fun. You might be in it to make money or to promote your business. You might be in it for the social networking. You might be simply trying to prop up your image. Hey, whatever works for you.
