Retro Friday: Ultrafunk Popcorn 1.99, And Thoughts On Email Minimalism

popcorn 199 screenshotI received an email from the developer of the Ultrafunk Popcorn email client yesterday:

Hi Rich,

I accidentally stumbled upon your posts about the Popcorn mail client on PCMech.com, and although I have no idea if you have any interest in it anymore, I thought you might like to know that after 3 long years, it has finally been updated quite a bit to work much better with Windows Vista and Windows 7, and it has also become more user friendly.

Anyway, if you want to know more, the latest version (1.99) can be downloaded here: http://www.ultrafunk.com/popcorn/ toghether with the usual update notes and a fresh screenshot.

Keep up the good work! :-)

The Popcorn email client is as no-frills as you can get with email in Windows. Since I’ve written about it before, if you want to know how it works, just see that article. A video is included there so it’s easy to follow along.

Now of course when it comes to mail clients like this, many people all have the same one-word question:

Why?

Anyone who is an email minimalist could fire back the snarky answer of, “If you have to ask, then you just don’t understand.”

I’m a snarky guy myself, but I’ll give a better answer. Email minimalists know that email is for nothing but plain text and that bold/italic/underline/colored (as in HTML formatted) text, images and anything that isn’t plain raw text has absolutely no place in email and never did.

Email is supposed to be simple and easy, and that’s exactly what you get with Popcorn. One would use Popcorn for the same reason one would use Mutt, that being email should be exclusively plain text and nothing else.

Most people aren’t email minimalists, and that’s okay. But those who are the minimalist type are typically able to handle their email a whole lot better. When you take away all the fluff, you can concentrate more on the messages at hand.
