As far as I know, there is no recent statistical information on what people are using these days for email clients. Sure, you’ll find user stats for webmail like Hotmail, Y! Mail, Gmail and so on, but as for mail clients, not really.
My guess – and yes, this is only a guess – is that there are still a fair amount of Microsoft Outlook Express 6 users out there (the default mail client bundled with Windows XP). Probably more than most people realize. Granted, OE6 users aren’t anywhere near in number compared to webmail users, but there are some people – much like Eudora users – that absolutely refuse to give the client up because they like the way it works.
If you intend on using OE6 for a few more years, there is a specific way you should run the client so you can avoid spyware/malware exploits, and what you can do on a limited level concerning spam control. See video below for details.

I was a long time Outlook Express user but stopped using it a few years ago after it started misbehaving constantly with frequent crashes and asking for folder compaction daily. I switched to Thunderbird which I still use and is very similar. There is now no trace in my computer from OE because I have since upgraded to Windows 7 and did a fresh install.
