With the Crucial m4 SSD models for example, the firmware update makes "stuck in sleep mode" a non-issue. As long as the SSD you have is running the latest firmware by the OEM, you should have no sleep/hibernation issues whatsoever.

Earlier SSDs did have issues when bringing a laptop out of sleep, but SSD firmware updates have fixed that. Everything I do I keep on the 256GB easily with plenty of room to spare. I do have a 500GB HDD external backup but it's only used for that and not regular production use of any kind.As far as how to instruct Win7 to place files on another assigned drive within the system, the process is the same as if you would do it with two internal HDDs. If you have drives C and D, whenever you install any program you simply instruct it to install to D instead of C. On an app-specific level like LibreOffice Writer, you can instruct that app to always save files to a particular drive (or cloud folder like SkyDrive/Dropbox) instead of the host drive.

There are still people getting along today with 80GB and 160GB HDDs just fine, so the idea of 256GB being “not that much” is a matter of opinion. One technical question: 256 GB isn’t all that much nowadays. So I presume you have another big HDD where you keep all your data. How do you “tell” Win7 to put your data on the HDD when you have installed the OS and programs on the SSD?

Very interesting article Rich.<br

The only variation I have seen is the PCI E x8 SSD which required a 4 pin molex power connector but those are probably discontinued.

Not that I am aware of.
