Safari 5 Released

Giving the 10% of you out there who use the Safari browser a bit of love, today Apple released Safari 5 for download. I am a Firefox user, so I was curious about the new features offered by Safari and a few of them are actually pretty interesting:

  • Safari Reader – this is a pretty good idea as it brings the content you are reading to the forefront while shading out other “distractions” on the page.
  • Performance – every new browser release outdoes all of the competitors, so I don’t pay much attention to this. I would actually be surprised if this was not included in the new features.
  • Hardware acceleration on Windows

The reason I like to follow new browser releases is because features added to one are usually incorporated into the others (either natively or via an add-on) at some point.

So Safari users, go grab the new version if you haven’t already.

I had previously tried all the main browsers.
FF and Opera were the best.
Chrome is irritating, as it does not save as MHT.
Also it has an Apple’ish approach, by hiding much of the functionality from you, and just showing a few choices (THAT THEY DECIDED WERE ALL YOU NEED).
I want the ability to show all the menus, so I can decide what I want to do.
(I don’t use chrome for those two reasons.)

For those that save Web pages to the hard drive, if you don’t know what MHT is, you really should learn, as it avoids having files with companion folders. Also in those companion folder, you may have lines about a mile long.

    Now back to Safari.
It does have more menu options that Chrome, but in a typical Apple way they have decided that some options are not for us.
Haven’t used it for a wee while, as it only lasted about an hour on my PC, until I ‘plucked it out’ (‘If thy eye offends you, …..’)
Here are a couple of the irritations -
    - Cannot save as MHT
    - Cannot remember your last session, and re-open all thsoe Tabs automatically.
I don’t remember the other FAULTS, but they were features that the normal browsers supply.

Has Apple got less arrogant, and conformed with normal browser features, in this latest release ?

PS In case you think that I only hate Apple -
MS are getting arrogant, with later releases of their Office software (EG Ribbon taking up some of OUR screen space, and no option to replace it with menus).
Also Windows 7 does not allow reverting to Classic Start menu.
And I hear the IE9 will not be allowed in XP.
If they stopped building IE into the foundations of Windows, none of the complications with IE would exist. There should be a law preventing MS from complicating Operating systems, by welding application functionality into the OS.)

The hidden buttons are hidden because usage data suggest that those buttons are not used as often.

It is not because someone wiht a big pay packet than you thinks that you dont need it.
