If you common create “new” office documents by opening an existing and
then using “Save As” to create a copy, consider saving the document as
a template. This way when you open the template and click “Save”
instead of “Save As”, there is no chance of overwriting your existing
file as either way it prompts you for a name to save the file as.
The process is simple. Open the document you currently use for your
template, select “Save As”, then save as type template. In Excel, the
file extension is .xlt and in Word the extension is .dot.
This can save you a lot time clicking Edit > Undo when you
accidentally save over an existing document.
