Some of you may remember the iconic game, Scorched Earth, which was simple in concept (destroy the opponents tanks by launching artillery at them), but utilizing a random terrain and weather generator along side a consistent physics engine offered infinite replay-ability. As you can probably imagine, the graphics on this game are way behind the times, so for a modern remake take a look at Scorched 3D:
Scorched 3D incorporates a lively three dimensional landscape that includes animated jets, naval vessels, water, and even birds, in addition to detailed tanks and projectiles. Other enhancements include LAN and internet play and music. Scorched 3D is totally free to play and is available for both Microsoft Windows and Unix (Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Solaris etc.) operating systems.
If you have never played either game, Scorched 3D offers a good overview of the game play on their site. With the ability to play over the network, this is an ideal game to play that won’t take all day… for a single game at least.

Scorched Earth was awesome! Although, I remember the napalm being way too powerful, destroying shields and any tank in a ditch.
