Screencast How-To

Posted Aug 6, 2007 by Rich Menga

The question that is asked over and over and over is “How do you do screencasts?” Even though this has been video tutorial-ized at least a hundred times elsewhere on the internet, here’s our version.

Now stop asking me how I screencast. :-)

I’ve heard about Camstudio before but I have seem Camtasia used before by PCTech screencasts. My question is… is one better than the other? I haven’t had the opportunity to use Camtasia but what would drive someone to pay for it and not use Camstudio. If anyone has an answer I thank you.

CamStudio does not seem to be available now. The rendersoftware.com home page now plugs the Adobe product, RoboDemo. The URL in this screeencast now tries to redirect to Adobe’s RoboDemo page.

As I suspected, CamStudio was acquired by Adobe. However, someone has found a free version and makes it available free at http://www.camstudio.org/

See the note at the bottom of that page for the story behind the temporary disappearance of the free version of CamStudio.

After watching some of your videos and gaining a lot of info and insight into ubuntu (thanks) I was wondering if CamStudio is the tool you use to create the videos on your site. If so how do you achieve the zooming effect where you zoom in for the close-ups on menus and such (video showing how you create that effect would be good).
