Seagate Flips The Bird To Linux With Free Agent Series Hard Drives

Posted Dec 11, 2007 by Rich Menga

In a sort of odd maneuver, Seagate has released a batch of hard drives called Free Agent that aren’t supported under Linux. The reason they won’t work is because the drives has incompatible-to-Linux power-saving features and are formatted to NTFS on delivery.

I suppose I can see Seagate’s "Why bother?" standpoint since Linux isn’t used on the desktop end nearly as much as Windows or Mac boxes. However, one would think it would make sense to release a hard drive that would work on any modern operating system - and Linux definitely counts.

And if you’re thinking "Isn’t it a bit ironic a hard drive called Free Agent won’t run under Linux?", you’re right.

So Seagate is run by a bunch of limp dicks who gave into Microsoft’s bullying and threats. No problem. Nobody needs Seagate. Five years from now when Microsoft goes tits up Seagate will correct their foolish mistake. Or maybe they won’t. Does anybody really care?
