See How Taxes You Pay Are Spent

For those of us in the United States, today is tax day. If you haven’t submitted your paperwork yet, you are probably working diligently on getting it finished.

Appropriately, if you would like to know where your tax money is going, check out the newly available Federal Taxpayer Receipt site:

In his State of the Union Address, President Obama promised that this year, for the first time ever, American taxpayers would be able to go online and see exactly how their federal tax dollars are spent. Just enter a few pieces of information about your taxes, and the taxpayer receipt will give you a breakdown of how your tax dollars are spent on priorities like education, veterans benefits, or health care.

Here you can see the well known categories (i.e. defense, education, etc.) broken down into the components that make up the total. If nothing else it is interesting to see what your share of each piece is.

  1. I have seen other sites where the ratios are different. For example defense spending is 18%. It would be interesting to know which sites are lying and which are telling the truth. I suspect partisan sites like this Obama site are not exactly telling the truth.

The fact is, this is not the first time taxpayers have been able to go online and see what percentage and where their taxes are being spent Sorry to you Obama supporters, but that is a flat out lie. It amazes me that he thinks we are so stupid that we think we never had this information before he was President.

  2. How are they spent? One word: poorly.
