By default, the Firefox spell checker only scans large textarea fields on web forms and does not scan normal text fields. While you can manually tell Firefox to check the spelling on these fields on a case-by-case basis, if you want to enable spell checking on text fields by default, then you need to change the browser’s configuration.
- Go to “about:config”. Simply type that into your location bar and you’ll get the config screen.
- In the filter field, type in “layout.spellcheckDefault“.
- It will jump you down to that variable. You’ll see that the default value is 1. Change it to 2.
- You’re done. No need to restart your browser.
Because normal text fields are used for many important items such as subjects on emails and forum posts, this might be something you want to consider turning on.
