Shortcut to Replacing Video Card Drivers

Posted Jun 24, 2006 by David Risley

Sometimes when you have to replace a video card, you can’t follow normal procedure and remove the drivers before you physically remove the card (perhaps because of an untimely end). In cases like these, here’s a shortcut to remove the old drivers without much hastle, and install the new ones for the new video card.

1) Shut down the computer, remove the old card, and install the new one.
2) Boot into VGA mode (Press F8 right before the Windows loading screen and select “Enable VGA mode”)
3) Dismiss any new hardware that the Operating System finds by hitting “Cancel” or “No” when prompted to install new hardware
4) Go into the Device Manager (Right click on “My Computer” > “Properties” > “Hardware” tab > Device Manager) and remove everything found under “Display Drivers”.
5) Reboot, and again, dismiss any hardware detection wizards that pop up.
6) Install the new drivers.

PCMech Highly Recommends...

This is the "kitchen sink" e-book for computer maintenance and repair. A jam-packed 346 pages. As Monte Russel (the author) says in his e-book, "Computers have always been complex, but if a guy that grew up out in the boonies in Wyoming can fix 'em, you can also!" Monte is a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Afterwards, he served a long career as a computer repair tech and network administrator. LEARN MORE
