Shut Your Computer Down Tonight For Earth Day

You may know that today is Earth Day. As someone who is personally a big believer and participant in reducing the footprint we have on our planet I feel obligated to post something on this subject. So I am reaching out to our readers to ask that tonight, if you don’t already, turn off your computer when you are done using it.

It is a myth that turning your computer off and on daily impacts the life of your computer.

If you purely look at the economics, shutting down your computer nightly can save you several hundreds a year as pointed out in the article above. What it does not mention, however, is that doing this also eliminates exhaust heat from your computer which means your AC runs less which leads to lower costs as well.

So again, for tonight remember to turn off your computer. Even better, get in the habit and do it every night (or at least put it in stand by).

  1. I got in the habit of turning off the computer every night for the last couple of years or so. But to speed up the process when turning it back on I put it in hibernate. When I turn it on it is back in business in less than 30 seconds.

Here in the Philippines, people are inclined to shutting down their PCs, so basically, even if it is not Earth Day, we are celebrating Earth Day habitually. I guess that is one of the good reasons for being a 3rd world and in a poverty-stricken country – Keeping our mother earth alive due to a strict budget on paying for electric bills. This is excluding the corrupt political and rich people in the country that travel abroad and behave like some good preachers about mother earth while turning everything with electricity in their houses “ON” without a care in the world. Thank god there is only about 10 percent of them from the entire population. Screw them. Ironic isn’t it. HAPPY EARTH DAY.

I ALWAYS use Standby when I’m taking more than a short break, and also turn off the monitor.
I have observed a noticeable decrease in power consumption since doing so.
    Strongly recommended.

  4. Turn your computer off every day Earth Day or not!

What the heck is Earth Day? Al Gore´s day off? All you need is use common sense all round, then you would not have to have special occasions for obvious trivialities. Get a life, man!

    • Earth Day was around long before Al made saving the earth his mission. Why screw with Jason’s ambition to do something good that doesn’t affect anyone else in a negative way? Stop being a douche.

Weather or not you believe in Global Warming, saving money and wear and tear on you computer is more than a few good reasons to power down every night.

  8. Ford recently started shutting down computers at their headquarters, automatically, at night and on weekends. Estimated annual savings: $1,200,000. Worth the effort!

  9. believe me or not, I CAN NOT!
