Yesterday, I sat down and made some further adjustments to the layout of this website. I make these changes in an effort to make the site easier to navigate as well as to allow you guys to find the content you want. This site currently has over 3,600 posts. And with 4-5 more being posted every day, posts cycle off our homepage pretty quickly these days. Once the post goes off the homepage, the trick is making sure YOU can find it.
The adjustments I made yesterday are:
- I have introduced a site map for PCMech. This site map will outline all of our categories for you, provide links to the major sections of PCMech, plus it will list out our most popular content, our article series, and links to monthly archives.
- I have dropped the previous Ligit-powered search and gone back to one powered by Google. The Lijit search is nice for the fact that they provide nice reporting on what people are searching for. But, the search was slow to load and was all javascript based. And, face it, nothing can compete with Google when it comes to search.
- I fixed the RSS feed icon found in the top header so that it doesn’t have a white border around it. Just a little visual thing.
- I have removed the list of article series from the right sidebar. As we have introduced a lot of content from PCMech EDU to this site for our premium members, the list of series has gotten pretty long and is, quite frankly, just too much to put into the sidebar.
- The member login has been moved from the right sidebar up to the new, light yellow bar at the top of the site.
Also, a couple weeks ago, you may have noticed that we are designating premium, members-only content with a small star graphic. Any article on this site which shows up in the archives with a star next to it is for members only. You will also notice that, as you browse the site homepage and go back in the archives, premium content also has a yellow border around it.
Some further adjustments may be afoot. PCMech is a constant work in progress. ![]()
