SMC7004WBR Wireless Broadband Router

Because of it’s ease of use and relative price, the 7004WBR could rate very high. There are a few bad points that stand out in my mind that bring it down. Even though they are small, they add up considerably when judging the router.

First, the paper manual provided has only four sides to it, and is about the size of four to size business cards when folded up. It’s only goes through only a basic Physical installation of the system. In order to view the full product manual, you must run a setup program on a provided CD-ROM, and select to view the manual, which is in PDF format. I see this as a small attempt in order to cut costs by forfeiting user friendliness and customer service, which doesn’t sit well with me at all.

Second is the actual physical lay out of the router. In the back is the pair of Wireless antennae, LPT port for Printer Sharing, and the serial port to connect to a Dial Up ISP, AC/DC Plug-in, and ON/OFF Switch. On the front are the RJ-45 Jacks and Status LEDs. I would much rather see everything but the ON/OFF Switch and AC/DC plug-in on the same side because how it is currently setup, it can possibly have wires hanging off from both the front and back, taking up more room on my desk than I have to give up.

Because of those pit-falls, I see the 7004WBR as only average, and give it a score of 3/5
