::Sniff sniff:: I smell something burning

As y’all know (or at least you do now) I’m not much of a 3D Gaming
person.  That’s why I’m not that much involved in Max3D
aside from my usual administrative work. (hitting the “upload”
button can be hard sometimes.)  But, for the first time, I’m going
to dedicate all of this week’s Transistorized and the Tormented to
3Dfx, and their new line of Voodoo Cards.

The
first thing I noticed when I looked over the new Voodoo Cards, was the
big, bad, Voodoo 5 6000.  This thing, is built like a Quad Pentium
Pro Server from a few years back.  This beast has 4 CPUs, along
with 128MB of RAM for all of that data.  I can’t even begin to
imagine what kind of performance you will get in ANY 3D Game out of that
one.  Then, there are the lesser cards.  When I say lesser,
the only thing I mean is that they are less in performance than the
6000.  I don’t mean that they are inferior cards be any
means.  Ranging from 32 of 128MB of SDRAM, and 1 to 4 processors,
these things kick some real hinny.  Of course, I have yet to see
one on retail yet.  (Too bad for all those kiddies wanting one for
Christmas.)  The best graphics card I’ve seen is the one based on
the GEForce 256.  That, is beside the point.  The point I’m
getting at here, minus all the swearing, would be:

What
in God’s name is the point of spending more money on a graphics card
than your CPU?!?

I know
there is a very logical answer for all of you 3D nuts out there, but for
people like me.  The ones that run office apps all day, what’s the
point?  Even if you’re mildly into gaming, there is not
point.  Sometimes, there is a point at which, even in the Computer
Industry, there is an overkill of some-sort.  To me, owning a
Voodoo 5 6000 would be, in effect, like owning a Quad Xeon Processor
server, to run Outlook 2000 to check your e-mail twice a day.
Now…if you’re the kind of person that spends all day playing 3D games,
I have two things to tell you

  • Buy
    a Voodoo 5 6000

  • Get
    a life!

Once
again, I’m not saying the performance of the Voodoo5 6000 is horrible,
I’m just saying that it’s a slight (HUGE!!!) overkill.
