In the past, I have written about several applications which hide open windows/processes from prying eyes. For the most part, this is applicable in a workplace (cubicle) environment where you never know who is looking over your shoulder. While I would never advocate using tools like this for something which can get you in trouble, having workspace security is important. For some practical information on this subject, check out this article called “10 ways to work more securely“.
For the most part, these points are not groundbreaking but they are certainly effective. I would say the big ones are:
- Use a strong password (not your dogs name or your child’s birthday). At the very least pick a random word and put a number on the end, i.e. “Unicorn4″.
- Don’t save your passwords. Even if you use something like Firefox with the master password you need to be careful because once you enter your password once you are not prompted again until you close your browser.
- Lock your workstation. When you go to the bathroom, to refill your coffee or whatever; a quick Ctrl+Alt+Delete – Enter prevents others from getting on your computer.
These are not tips for the paranoid, but for everyone. After all, better safe than sorry, right?
