Over the years there’s been several attempts to get people hooked on internet audio, so to speak. I’m not talking about listening but rather publishing. In the early-to-mid 2000s there were several attempts by companies to tie blogging into audio, but it just never worked.
SoundCloud, on the other hand, does work; they are basically the only game in town when it comes to publishing audio easily whether you just want to do dictation-style stuff, post songs you’ve written and so on. I do it, and am genuinely happy with the service because it’s easy to post and easy to share out on places like Facebook and Twitter. It’s also easy to tie in buy links to audio if you post your stuff to iTunes/Amazon/Bandcamp, etc.
The SoundCloud service is so good that they just received another $50 million in fundraising, letting you know that yes, they’re definitely doing something right.
