In Outlook Express this function has three settings: 1) Automatically respond to such a request, 2)Ask before sending a response, or 3) Do not send a response.The setting can be found in Outlook Express by clicking Tools>Options>Receipts. Other mail software may vary. Provided that the client isn't set to automatically send a response you should be safe in this area.It can sometimes be difficult to tell that an email is spam before opening it.
