ROT13 means "rotate by 13 places". It’s meant to be used as a substitution cipher but also makes a darn fine way to pick a username when you’re stuck for ideas.
When using ROT13, take any letter and ‘move it forward’ 13 letters ahead. A would be N, F would be S, and so on.
"What if I’m near the end of the alphabet?"
In that case, go ‘back to the front’ to complete the count. T would be G, Z would be M, and so on.
"What if there are numbers?"
ROT13 is meant for letters only, being there are only 10 numbers (0 thru 9).
"Is there an easy way to ROT13 a word?"
Yes, www.rot13.com. Punch in any word, press ‘Cypher’ and it will be ROT13′d instantly.
"What should I use for a username in ROT13?"
The easiest one is your first or last name, assuming it doesn’t have too many letters in it.
Examples: RISLEY in ROT13 is evfyrl, MENGA in ROT13 is zratn.
The cool part about using your name in ROT13 is that it’s highly unlikely you’d ever forget it. Even if you forget what your name is in ROT13, just write out the regular spelling and count each letter 13 letters forward, and you got it.
"Can I use my name in ROT13 as a password?"
You could, but I’d actually recommend against doing this given that it’s really easy to figure out. With usernames, ROT13 is good. With passwords, not so much. ![]()
