The Heat is on…

Posted Jan 21, 2000 by mdockter

The Race to 1GHz at room temperature with an x86 CPU is in the
home stretch.  Intel and AMD are the only ones in the race, being
Cyrix isn’t even making CPUs close to 1/2 GHz (500MHz.)  In the
latest happenings, AMD actually has a 800MHz part on the shelf, while
Intel has only announced a 750Mhz and 800Mhz part, but many people,
like myself, have not seen core nor cache of these phantom Intel
chips.  First point:  Remember when the AMD Athlon first
came out, and a Super Cooler was needed to get to 800Mhz?  Second
point:  Has the Processor industry come down to the point where
to actually have a CPU on the market, all you need to do is announce
it?  If so, in that case, I have a 3Ghz chip, called “Dr.
Speed” that I’m willing to sell for a cool $250,000.  In my
honest opinion, (remember everyone, I’m also a physic) I believe that
Intel will announce the 1GHz chip first, but AMD will be the first one
to get to market.  Just remember when going out to by the 1GHz
chip, that a 950Mhz AMD Athlon will perform just as well as a 1GHz
Intel Pentium iii.  And, as we all know, the AMD will more than
likely be a hell of a lot cheaper.

I must have been dreaming
As of now, I am torn between two Microsoft Operating
Systems.  The new Windows 2000, and the tried and true Windows 98
Second Edition.  If you know me well enough, you’ll know that I’m
not much of a gamer.  That is why I have handed over the Chief
Editor position at our sister site Maximum3D
over to a man much more fit for the job, RobbyD.
Although I will still have Administrative Powers (which are nil if
any) of the site, I will no longer be dealing with the uploading, of
articles, and the finer points of content.  Being I’m not much of
a gamer, the logical thing to think of me is that I use my computer
for mostly business reasons.  I mostly use FrontPage 2000,
Outlook 2000, Word 2000, IE 5.01, and all the other great business
suites.  But, as many others, I fear the loss of compatibility
with Windows 9x, and the pervious version of NT, NT 4.0.  Being I
am torn between Win98 and Win2K, I need your help to decide which
Operating System I will run.  Next week, I’ll give you the

results.

PCMech Highly Recommends...

The Hacker's Nightmare is a full 500+ pages of valuable content. It has plenty of diagrams and illustrations and is broken down into small sections with easy step-by-step procedures. This is what I like about this book. It is powerful information that everybody needs, but it doesn't read like a boring computer manual. LEARN MORE
