The How and Why of Disabling YouTube Embedding(And Why you Shouldn’t)

So, let’s say you’ve uploaded a cool new video to YouTube…and you’re worried someone might try to snatch it for themselves, and use it to spice up their website or display on their page. Hey, it’s a legitimate concern, right? Fortunately, for you, it’s pretty easy to prevent this sort of content ‘theft’ from occurring.

All you need to do is sign in to your YouTube account, and click on your username (it’s in the upper right). Select your Video Manager, and then hit “edit” on the right of the video you want to protect. When the menu pops up, hit “Advanced Settings” and look for Embedding. Simply uncheck the box, save your changes, and you’re golden. Same goes for when you’re uploading new videos. Good job! You’ve just disabled embedding!

The thing is…why would you want to?

For one, a lot of tools-such as YouTube Repeat and YouTube Doubler- actually require embedded video to function. In other words, by disabling embedding, you pretty much bork both of those tools straight through the roof. But hey, you’re not getting any views from them anyway, right? And at least if embedding is disabled, people will be able to click on your video to view it on-site, right?

Not exactly.

First off, not letting people embed your video frustrates a lot of folks. For one, it makes it a lot more difficult to share the video for bloggers- and you’d be surprised how many views a video might get if the right blogger covers it.In other words, making a video more difficult to share means less people will bother to share it. Less people sharing means less views. And less views, well, that means less income if you’re relying on YouTube to monetize a video.

There’s also the fact that, in most cases, if a video is embedded, playing it will count as giving it views anyway, unless the person embedding it foolishly sets it so that it autoplays. Finally, there’s also the fact that -in a lot of cases- you have no place disabling embedding if the content you’ve uploaded wasn’t even yours to begin with. There’s quite a few videos out there with embedding disabled that obviously belong to well-known artists and composers…most of whom I’m pretty sure don’t have YouTube accounts like “lolnyancat82.”

In other words, if you’re disabling embedding, you should invest in a firearm- you’ll want to shoot yourself in the foot a few more times for good measure.
