Features
Forwarding – This allows to forward
TCP port ranges that are sent to the router to an IP address on the LAN.
This is needed if you want to play multiplayer games, especially over the
Zone. If this is set up, I have not seen any problems playing
multiplayer games yet.Access Control – This allows an administrator
to block and set up filters to disallow users from accessing the
internet. Also this can help set up a more advanced firewall.DHCP – This stands for Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol, and is used to dynamically provide clients with an
IP address and TCP/IP information. This can be used in two ways.
Your cable modem ISP can use it to provide you an IP, and this router can
also act as a DHCP server. This will allow you to set up the network
easier because each computer will receive the network information from the
DHCP server. This should be disabled if you already have a DHCP, for
it will cause havoc on the network.Print Server – This is the only router
with an integrated Print server. The only big complaint is that to use this
print server, you must install a special port off the SMC CD. I don’t see
why SMC couldn’t use a standard TCP/IP port instead of a proprietary port.
Other wise the Print server worked great.
Final Thoughts on the SMC router
- Pros
- 7 10/100 Ports
- Manager Interface
- Print Server
- DHCP for easy setup
- COM port
- Front Style ports
- Cons
- Limited number of Forwarding Entries
- Proprietary Print Server
- Slow WAN speeds (more on that later)
