Time To Play With Blocks: LEGO Digital Designer

Everybody likes LEGOs. If you don’t like LEGOs, then there’s something wrong with you. There’s just something about putting blocks together that’s just super-cool-awesome. LEGOs are so well-liked that the brand single-handedly revived LucasArts gaming with the LEGO Star Wars series.

A free "utility" that’s available is the LEGO Digital Designer, which runs on Windows or Mac. It is what you think it is – LEGO-building coolness on your computer, and it’s free.

When you start off, you’re presented with DESIGNbyME, Mindstorms, Universe or you can open an existing design or free-build.

If you know nothing about putting blocks together, that’s not a problem as several templates are available within the program. The left sidebar also conveniently groups certain pieces to make block-finding a relatively simple process.

The LDD program is actually very well done with thoughtful touches put throughout. Aside from the fun factor and strictly speaking from a technical point of view, this is a good, stable app.

What’s the best part about the LEGO Digital Designer?

Let’s say you put something together you think is really cool and would like to buy it. You can. A price is calculated, your bricks are hand-picked based on what you built, and then you can buy it and build your design in real life.

That’s just plain frickin’ awesome.

I’ve used this, and on many occasions actually, and it is a good program.  The controls can be a bit frustrating though, and not all the blocks that are out there are able to be used, unless they’ve updated it because I haven’t used it in a while.  But it is a good thing to waste your free time on
