Tips For “Mission Critical” Tinkering In A Live Environment

This tip is for those of you who have a live environment (such as website, network, etc.) you maintain.

Whenever your environment is working, always be wary when making changes. If at all possible, work with a separate non-live copy of your environment so you can see how the ramifications of your changes. If working within a copy is not an option, make sure you appropriately document your existing settings (screenshots are always good) in the order you apply them. This way is something goes wrong, you can methodically reverse everything to find what the problem is. Don’t be in a rush. If you forget to document something, it can lead to a major headache.

For the most part, a lot of this information should go without saying, but we all know “in theory” and “in reality” are two different things…
