TransferJet Is Coming

image TransferJet is a brand spanking new wireless technology. It’s low-power and can send data at 375 megabits per second. And no, that’s not a typo – it’s fast. (Note: Some other manufacturers are claiming 560 megabits!)

When will we be seeing TransferJet tech? February, as in next month.

But hang on, don’t go and throw out all your Bluetooth devices for this just yet. TransferJet is purposely designed to be used only at a very short range – around 3 centimeters (1.18 inches). In the article linked above, it is "..designed to replace the cables that are typically needed to connect gadgets."

The keyword to pay attention to is gadgets, meaning not PCs. And given the very short range it purposely omits security protocols because said honestly, nobody is going to intercept what you’re transmitting at a 3cm distance. And when you want to quickly transfer data from one device to the next, a technology of this type is very convenient because it doesn’t require the usual Bluetooth pairing process.

However there’s one big drawback. It requires the new "TransferJet Memory Stick" card to use. Boo.. hiss.. Yet another proprietary media format. That we don’t need. But given the speed of which the data transfers and the no-hassle way of using it, people may be willing to deal with that drawback.

Will it allow for gadget-to-PC connectivity and vice versa? I’m sure it will. But when first introduced to market it will be mainly for gadget-to-gadget.
