Turn Any Webpage Into A Shoot-Em-Up Game

If you are looking for a little fun in an otherwise boring day, instead of “aimlessly” wondering the web, why not blow it up? Using the unique Firefox add-on, Destroy the Web (see note below), you can do just that.

Destroy the Web is a game add-on for Firefox, built specifically to take advantage of the new features introduced in Firefox 3.5. A first of its kind, the goal in the game is to destroy each and every Web page, competing for the high score against players around the world!

This truly is a unique and clever idea as it works with any webpage out there. In fact, this add-on won an award for being among the best Firefox 3.5 extensions. Before giving this a try, however, please note that this extension is listed as experimental so if you experience bugs, report them to the author.

Edit: Some readers have reported this extension redirects to questionable websites. I have personally used this issue add-on with no issue, but please be aware of this.

This addon gave me a virus or fake virus of some sort. Seems to be limited to firefox however. WHen I load up the browser I am bombarded with fake virus warning messages and prompts to download executables.

Matt is right…don’t get close to THAT website. It set off the warning bells about being “loaded” with all kinds of junk…AVG didn’t like it AT all!

The author addresses this in the comments on the Firefox download page. From what I could tell by using it (around a week ago), it seemed to be related to the high score feature.

Ok, I just reloaded it and tried on both the Gmail and PCMech with no issues. I am running MS Security Essentials as the AV and didn’t get any pop-ups, ads or warnings.

What sites are you guys trying this on as I cannot see any problem.

  5. Definite problem here. I think I got a malware popup just from leaving his website. The advertising network is probably infected. Stay away from this add-on!

Uninstalling the addon didn’t seem to help. But then I reinstalled firefox and everything seems normal. I’m still a little wary, but I think it’s all good. If I had to guess, there was probably no actual infection, and the addon simply redirected your browsing to sites that tried to get you to download bad stuff.

Even if it’s a legit addon with an infected partner network, I think there’s enough evidence to warrant disclaiming this tip. If it’s possibl, I’d recommend at least editing the tip with info about this problem, if not recalling it altogether.

      I added an edit.
I still cannot replicate what you are seeing… again, I am using MS Security Essentials, so maybe it doesn’t flag it.

I have only ever had problems with AVG. Many legitimate sites and downloads get flagged as viruses and I have even had games’ EXE’s come under AVG’s rampant suspicions. I highly recommend not using AVG and trying something like avast! instead. avast! is a very good FREE antivirus.
